Chiefly correspondence of the family of Henry Haynsworth Wells (1804-1879), owner of Mt. Hope plantation, Sumter County, S.C. Letters addressed to Caroline Emma "Callie" Wells (1847-1921), Ann Elizabeth Michau Wells, William R. Wells, Lydia Louise Henrietta Wells (1836-1879), and Esther Elizabeth Wells Snider. [Photocopies with transcriptions completed, 1990, by Henry Herbert Wells III from originals in the possession of Rhett Wells.] Topics include South Carolina's ratification of the Confederate constitution and military actions leading up to the bombardment of Fort Sumter (4 Apr. 1861); Palmetto buttons for regimental uniforms (Dec. 1861); Confederate defense of Charleston (8 Apr. 1863); the fall of Atlanta and comments re the command by Jefferson Davis for the removal, 17 July 1864, of Joseph E. Johnston (5 Sept. 1864); Samuel Perdriau Wells' status as a prisoner of war at Johnson Island, Ohio (20 May 1865); and news of the welfare of relatives and friends in Confederate service. Letters are to Henry Haynsworth Wells, chiefly from his children, primarily his oldest son, Henry Duplessis Wells (1830-1865), a Confederate soldier in the 23rd South Carolina Regiment.
